Brent crude rose 5% to settle at $87.72/bbl, reviving inflation concerns as US CPI release looms. Monday's global equity session was bifurcated. Asian markets started on a firm footing, riding the tailwind of Friday's US payrolls miss, while US equities traded largely flat as concerns of AI circular financing and higher oil prices complicated the picture. Market saw a broad sell-off in sovereign bonds, pushing yields higher across curve. The dollar was firmer on Monday, recovering from Friday's payrolls-driven weakness. The yen, on the other hand, continued to erase its joint US-Japan intervention-driven gains. Spot gold staged a bullish breakout to above US$4400/oz level. Cleveland Fed President Hammack, one of the dissenters to the FOMC July’s hold decision, said that "some number" of rate hikes may be needed to bring inflation to 2%, and that she does not see inflation coming back down on its own. BoJ’s July Summary of Opinions was released on Monday, with board member voicing concerns over upside risks to inflation, on the back of higher energy costs, expanded AI-related demand, and weaker yen. Many pointed out the current financial conditions remained accommodative, while one suggested faster pace of hikes. Data calendar was fairly light on Monday. Eurozone’s Sentix investor confidence improved for the fourth consecutive month, to 0.9 in August, beating market consensus at -0.5. Both current situation (at -8.0) and expectation index (at 10.3) rose, though hig her energy cost continued posted drag on outlook. Japan’s current account balance unexpectedly swung to deficit of JPY92.3 billion in June (vs. consensus of JPY1,512 billion surplus). Market Watch: Asian markets may trade with a softer tone today, while awaiting the RBA ’ s decision which is tipped to keep its cash rate unchanged at 4.35%. Today ’ s key release include Australia ’ s July NAB business confidence, South Kore a’s August trade data (10 days), Malaysia’s June industrial production, US ’ July NFIB small business confidence and existing home sales. For the week ahead, US' July CPI (forecast: 0.1% MoM and 3.4% YoY respectively) and PPI final demand (forecast: 0.2% MoM and 4.9% YoY respectively) will be the key catalysts for market’s move. Meanwhile, investors will also watch US’ July retail sales and August consumer sentiment, UK, Japan and Taiwan's 2Q26 GDP growth, as well as China’s July monetary and credit data. On the central bank front, RBA ’ s Bullock will hold press conference this afternoon, while Fed's Barkin are scheduled to speak this week. Major Markets CN: China’s headline CPI inflation moderated further to 0.5% YoY in July from 1.0% YoY in June. The reading also undershot market expectations for a seasonal pickup in food and services prices. While both categories did strengthen, including a 6.6% MoM jump in tourism prices, the gains were more than offset by a sharp decline in energy prices. Despite volatility in crude oil markets during the month, vehicle fuel prices fell another 9.8% MoM. Encouragingly, core CPI rose 0.3% MoM, pointing to relatively resilient underlying consumer demand once the more volatile food and energy components are excluded. Looking ahead, weather-related disruptions should continue to support seasonal increases in food prices in August, while pork prices have also begun to stabilise and rebound from low levels. These factors should provide some support to headline inflation. We expect CPI inflation to edge up to around 0.7% YoY in August. ID: President Prabowo Subianto nominated Bank Indonesia acting governor Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate to lead the central bank following Perry Warjiyo’s resignation on 25 July. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government submitted Destry’s nomin ation to parliament on Monday but did not clarify whether she would complete Warjiyo’s remaining term or begin a new five year term, while Prabowo also nominated candidates for other senior central bank posts. Parliament can consider the nominations from 14 August, when lawmakers return from recess. MY: The Department of Irrigation and Drainage has deployed 606 portable emergency pumps nationwide, ready for mobilisation within 24 hours to support water supply, agricultural irrigation and forest and peatland firefighting operations during El Niño. The department is also monitoring 56 dams nationwide and uses digital systems to track pump and water gate operations in real time, while its National Water Balance Management System provides water availability projections up to two months ahead and early warnings up to 14 days in advance. MetMalaysia expects El Niño to continue until early 2027, with lower rainfall forecast across several parts of Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, increasing drought risks and pressure on water resources. Sustainability MY: According to a study by the Malaysian Steel Institute (MSI), the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could impose costs of approximately RM970.7 mn for Malaysia’s iron and steel industry in 2026, with these costs expected to increase progress ively over subsequent years. Malaysia’s iron and steel exports to the EU in 2025 amounted to around 752,000 tonnes worth RM3.23 bn, accounting for around 12.5% of total export volume and 13% of total export value. While the CBAM presents additional cost pressures for the industry, it also presents an opportunity to accelerate the transition towards low- carbon steel production. To support this shift while safeguarding the competitiveness of domestic producers, the government has introduced measures aimed at enhancing industry readiness, including the development of a Carbon Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system. These efforts aim to accelerate decarbonisation in the iron and steel sector by improving energy efficiency and increasing renewable energy usage. Meanwhile, the implementation of Malaysia’s carbon tax has been delayed amid prevailing geopolitical headwinds and economic uncertainties. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, the Nasdaq fell 0.3%, and the Dow edged down 0.1%, pulling back from Friday's record close, the index's best week since April. Nvidia declined 2.9%, the largest drag on the S&P 500, reportedly on news that Wall Street firms are collaborating with the chipmaker on new initiatives, though the precise causal link to the day's decline was ambiguous; Coherent tumbled 14.2%. Financials outperformed, rising 0.3%, as the broader market struggled. With over 440 S&P 500 companies having reported, 86% have beaten estimates, on track for a seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit earnings growth, though the strong results were insufficient to offset macro headwinds. Brent crude surged above USD87 per barrel amid the ongoing Hormuz standoff, stoking fears the Fed may need to raise rates despite a softening labour market. Treasury yields rose 4 to 6 basis points across the curve, with the 10-year climbing to 4.71% and the 30-year reaching 5.25%, as oil-driven inflation concerns dominated. Markets are now squarely focused on Tuesday's CPI print as the next key catalyst .
