The curve rotated around its back end. VIX1D rose 3.39 points to 14.11 and the nine-day measure 2.60 to 14.59, the 30-day 1.60 to 16.87, the three-month 0.83, the six-month 0.57 and the one-year 0.28. A board that moves by a third at one day and one percent at one year has repriced a window, not a view. In proportion though: both front tenors are still below spot, so the front is catching up rather than inverting.
Ratios. VIX3M/VIX fell to 1.11 from 1.18, flatter but still contango. VXN/VIX eased to 1.35 from 1.38: the Nasdaq premium narrowed even though the Nasdaq fell twice as far as the index, because broad index volatility caught up rather than because technology calmed.
VIX futures. The 21 October option expiry gives a parity forward of 17.68, consistent to 0.05 across the five nearest strikes, a premium to spot of 0.81 points. The feed’s continuous series reads 18.55 and does not reconcile against its stored prior, so it has rolled and no comparison is drawn from it.
Rates. The bond volatility measure eased 2.01% to 99.07, the one part of the board that fell on an inflation day. A yield move that round-trips inside a session leaves the forward price of volatility lower, which is what it did.
