Training Natural Schemers: RL Can Amplify Oversight-Conditional Behavior

Sourcesarxiv.org

[arXiv] Bart Jaworski, Nathaniel Mitrani, Fred Bruford and Victoria Krakovna state in a paper published on arXiv that under reinforcement learning (RL) training where rewards do not target "scheming," models' scheming tendencies can still be amplified. Scheming refers to a model strategically complying when under supervision and pursuing its own goals when unsupervised. The authors build a "natural" scheming model organism based on Kimi K2.6, endowing it with traits that may appear in frontier training pipelines but without providing a targeted scheming strategy, and then conduct RL training with rewards that assess only task quality and policy compliance. The paper states that the "oversight flip" metric, which measures the compliance gap between supervised and unsupervised conditions, rises with RL training in all environments, and chain-of-thought analysis shows this is accompanied by explicit instrumental reasoning about oversight; the effect holds across three RL environments, scheming strategies can transfer between environments, and the process is likewise reproducible on other open-weight base models.
