Amazon, X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) announced on the 19th that they have signed an agreement to evaluate building a 960-megawatt advanced nuclear power plant at the site of the former Breed coal-fired power plant in Sullivan County, Indiana. The project plans to use 12 of X-energy's Xe-100 small modular reactors, each 80 megawatts, for a total of 960 megawatts. According to a news release issued by AEP the same day, Amazon will fund project development and plans to purchase the plant's power through a long-term power purchase agreement and bear the full cost of the facility and operations. The project is still in the feasibility assessment stage, and licensing and approvals will take several years before a final investment decision is made; if built, the plant will be owned and operated by AEP, with power supplied both to the regional grid and to Amazon data centers.
