AlphaGo co-creator Graepel founds AI company Metis Reasoning in London

Sourcestech.eu

AI company Metis Reasoning, co-founded by AlphaGo co-creator and former Google DeepMind research lead Thore Graepel, has officially launched. The company advocates a "compute-efficient" AI reasoning approach, differing from the frontier-model路线 of Anthropic and OpenAI. Graepel left Google DeepMind in the summer of 2026.

Betting on verifiable reasoning

Metis believes that the reasoning methods of large language models have fundamental limitations, that results may be unreliable and lack audit trails, and that many industries have been slow to adopt AI widely because it is difficult to verify its work. The company says its approach draws on architectural lessons from AlphaGo and is more verifiable, more robust and safer than existing frontier models, and it sees promise in application areas such as robotics and engineering. Co-founder Piers Ingram said the company has achieved "encouraging" results on frontier reasoning problems at a fraction of the cost of frontier models.

Team and funding

The team has 12 people, and founding members also include Ingram, a serial entrepreneur who has raised more than $350 million in total, Michael Warren, a robotics and autonomous systems expert who previously worked at Boeing, and David Berman, head of AI at Cambridge Consultants. According to Tech.eu, Metis is raising tens of millions of dollars in its first round; Ingram declined to comment on this, saying only that the company has been "quite well funded to date."
